Montenegro not keen to be hostage to Serbia's unresolved issues - minister

[Announcer] Montenegrin Minister of Foreign Affairs Miodrag Vlahovic has announced that he will tell his collocutors in New York, where he is to take part in the session of the UN General Assembly, that the Montenegrin government's position is that Montenegro is not ready to postpone the resolution of its legal status as a state because of other open issues in the region. If Kosovo is a priority for [State Union Foreign Minister Vuk] Draskovic, which is a legitimate matter, our priority is Montenegro, Minister Vlahovic said in an interview with the BBC in London, in which he explained the reasons why two separate delegations are travelling to the UN General Assembly session.

[Vlahovic] Montenegro has no intention, it is not ready and will not be ready to be a hostage or victim of some other unresolved and open issues in the western Balkans. We are not ready, and will not be ready, to be held hostage by a union which is waiting for somebody else to resolve issues in the region and only after that should we qualify to resolve our own issues in a free, normal and democratic way.

Because of other open issues, because of more serious and greater risks in the region we have postponed it twice, we have displayed maximum persistence, the Montenegrin government and the ruling political structures have an absolute duty towards their citizens to finalize this process.

* the modern Albanians were not mentioned in Byzantine chronicles until 1043, although Illyria was part of the Byzantine Empire, and since the Illyrians are referred to for the last time as an ethnic group in Miracula Sancti Demetri (7th century AD.), some scholars maintain that after the arrival of the Slavs the Illyrians were extinct. [3]
* (see the Jireček Line) it is believed that most inhabitants of Illyria were Hellenized (the Southern part) and later Romanized (opponents say that some Illyrians were not Hellenized or Romanized, but maintained their own language, which may have been a proto-Albanian language). [4]
* most Illyrian toponyms, hydronyms, names, and words have not been shown to be related to Albanian, and they do not indicate that Illyrians spoke a proto-Albanian language (opponents say that many of these toponyms, hydronyms and names are Hellenized and Romanized; whether the change in form is dramatic or not is hard to know in a number of cases).
* ancient Illyrian toponyms (such as Shkoder from the ancient Scodra, Tomor from ancient Tomarus) were not directly inherited in Albanian, as their modern names do not correspond to the phonetic laws of Albanian [5]
* a number of scholars believe that Illyrian was a Centum language, though others disagree. If Illyrian was Centum, then it is unlikely that Albanian (which is Satem) is an Illyrian language [6]

It appears the previous poster is deranged.

On the original post, yet more evidence of how everyone anywhere near Serbs, to include their cousins the Montenegrins, wants to get farther away.

Montenegro is an ideal place to join the EU. Beautiful coastline, beautiful mountain canyons, small terriotory, and small population. If I was like them, forget Serbs, run towards Europe.

Hmm thats un interesting idea but i think that montenegro and serbia should joina and make a even more powerfull union and go towards the eu together help each other out.

The economy is controlled by Russian companies, and this happened during the Union. You can't make the Union more powerfull if one side wants out.

i think that serbia and montenegro should join to make 1 country a new name a new record go towards the eu together. it solvs a lot of problems.

but what if both sides decided to join it would be the best idea wouldent it?

Wasn't it one country and even one union before? If there are any Montenegrins here I'd like to know what are the reasons for Montenegro wanting out of the Union. I read about most of the economy being owned by Russian firms and the Russian ambassador there behaving as head of state. Just curious.

The reason why Montenegro should go it alone is that it's totally a beast of its own kind. Most of the agriculture subsidies and market openess doesn't concern it at all becuase it doesn't have any production worth of mentioning nor any agriculture. Tourism is pretty much Montenegro's thing. So it should go through the negotiations process through an accelerated pace and get there fast. I'm sure Italy and Spain (from where Solana is from) might see it as a little competitor but it's still too small to make a difference.
Now the reason why it shouldn't wait for Serbia is that, frankly, it looks like it will take a while for Serbia: politically with the issue of human rights, democracy, and territorial claims and economically with its massive industries and the sizable agricultural production. Serbia also has an eight million large population which would have something perfect to look to if Serbs too make the right choices.

Just like K-Albanians are saying to Albania, Montenegrins should tell their brethren in Serbia: see you in Bruxelles.

A piece of advice to all the Montenegrins:

Mind your own interests! I am yet to hear of any other nation benefiting from being together with Serbia. Slovenians, Croats, Bosnians, Albanians, Macedonians cannot all be wrong, can they?

It's a lot easier for Montenegro to join the European Union because they have no serious issues such as human rights violations and for such a small country it is much easier to adapt European treaties and regulations.

In order for the results of any referendum to be legitimate, a qualified majority of Montenegrin citizens (both those born in the Republic and those currently residing there) must either vote in favour of or opposition to the Republic's secession from the Union. According to all recent opinion polls on the subject, support for independence hovers just around 45-50%, far from a qualified majority of 2/3, which means 'Montenegro' doesn't want out the the Union, but rather, its Government does. It would be a serious trampling on the rights of the other 40-45% who oppose independence if the bare-marjority 50% or so who desire it forced it onto the rest.

People of the world on tv they tell you everything that you want to hear the reporters report everything that you want to hear but my friends the end result is different. 15 years ago on Kosovo there were no albanians there was no war there were peacefull serbs. Today in Kosovo there are 90% albanians there is war there is terror our churches some of the most beautifull in the world were destroyed and you still hear over the tv that we did this. Well i leave you the decision to decide what really happened. The serbs have nothing to do with this.
And you still hear these days that there are albanians bieng tortured well do the math who is really terorising who??? Most of serbians on Kosovo are old and incapable and most of the Albanians are young. So this is the end of my message.
