Kosovo police return to man bridge in divided town

Mitrovica, 6 May: Members of the Kosovo Police Service have returned for the first time since the 17 March [2004] violence to the main bridge on the [River] Ibar which divides the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica from its southern part.

Two Kosovo policemen, one of ethnic Albanian and the other of Serb nationality, have gone into the prefab in the middle of the bridge.

They will together with Kfor [NATO-led Kosovo Force] secure the bridge and its surrounding area.

The Kosovo police will next month take over control of the bridge which separates the northern [mainly] Serb part of Kosovska Mitrovica from the southern Albanian part.

Kfor troops are due to withdraw to a nearby base located in the vicinity of the Culture Centre in the southern part of the town.

Since the 17 March 2004 outbreak of violence in Kosmet [Kosovo-Metohija], not one Serb lives in the southern part of Kosovska Mitrovica.
