UNMIK to introduce new Kosovo immigration law in May

Text of report by Kosovo Albanian television KohaVision TV on 13 April

[Announcer] At a joint press conference today, Kfor [NATO-led Kosovo Force] and UNMIK [United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo] said a new immigration law would come into force on 1 May this year. Regulation 2005/16, the basis of the legislation, was signed by the UNMIK deputy chief, Larry Rossin. The regulation sets the legal framework for immigration, i.e. defines the category of persons who may enter and stay in Kosova. Once the law comes into force on 1 May 2005, there is an interim period of 90 days during which time all persons currently in Kosova should apply for permission to remain in Kosova. Anyone who does not respect the law will be fined 1,000 euros, sentenced to 30 days in prison and expelled from Kosova for a period of six months to three years, UNMIK spokesperson Neeraj Singh said during a routine press conference today.
