The brother of former Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj was killed today in an attack in the west of the country.
Enver Haradinaj was shot near Rausic, a village 50 miles west of the provincial capital, Pristina, police and NATO officials said.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died, police said, adding that no one else was injured in the attack.
There was no known motive for the shooting, and the attackers fled the scene, police said.
Ramush Haradinaj resigned as Kosovo’s prime minister on March 8 to defend himself against charges of war crimes allegedly committed when he was a senior rebel commander during Kosovo’s 1998-99 war against Serb forces.
He surrendered on March 9 to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands, and is awaiting trial.
Enver Haradinaj was also a rebel fighter in the war, during which two other brothers were killed.
Another brother, Daut, is serving a five-year sentence for participating in the torture and killing of members of rival ethnic Albanian rebel group.
