(EU) EU/KOSOVO: Solana calls on new provisional government to implement standards and protection of minorities

Brussels, 07/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - During the setting up of the new provisional institutions of the autonomous government of Kosovo, following the elections for the Assembly in the province in October, the EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, called for these institutions to face the key challenges in the province: the need for speedy progress on standards implementation and for tangible results on the protection of minority communities in Kosovo. Mr Solana also underlined the need for full respect of UN Security Council resolution 1244 and expressed his support for the work of the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN, Soren Jessen-Petersen. Mr Solana also recalled that full cooperation with the ICTY (the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia) was binding on all parties and remained a policy objective of the EU throughout the region.
