Miraculous Chronicles of the Night is being published in Belgrade by a former associate of the author.

The book - set in 1980s Yugoslavia - is partly autobiographical, publisher Miroslav Toholj said. It reached him "through secret channels", he added.

The wife of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, currently on trial in The Hague, also has a new book out.

Mirjana Markovic's latest volume is a collection of interviews.

Historical novel

Mr Karadzic was a poet and writer before becoming leader of the Bosnian Serbs in the early 1990s.

His latest opus is about a man who finds himself jailed by mistake after the death of former Yugoslav strongman Josip Broz Tito in 1980.

"The author suggests in the book that the break-up of the Balkans began after Tito's death," Mr Toholj said during the launch on Monday.

"This novel will become world famous and will be a source of satisfaction for the author, after the false accusations levelled against him," he added.

Radovan Karadzic has been charged with genocide by the war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

Markovic is wanted in Belgrade on two international warrants

He has been hiding for eight years - and is presumed to be in the Serbian part of Bosnia.

Mr Toholj is a former Bosnian Serb information minister. He says he got the book "through secret channels as a computer disk".

The launch comes on the day a book by former Yugoslav President Milosevic's wife, Mirjana Markovic, is being published - also in Belgrade.

Entitled simply Keep this Book, it is a collection of interviews she gave between 1999 and 2003.

Mrs Markovic is believed to be living in Moscow.

She is wanted by the Serbian authorities on charges of abuses of power.

She is also suspected of involvement in the murder of a former president of Serbia, Ivan Stambolic.
