EU to suspend negotiations with Serbia

Text of report in English by Croatian news agency HINA

Brussels, 2 May: The European Union will have to suspend negotiations with Serbia and Montenegro about the Stabilization and Association Agreement because the country is not fully cooperating with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said in Brussels on Tuesday [2 May], adding that a formal decision would be adopted after consultation with ICTY Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte. Facts speak for themselves, Ratko Mladic is not in The Hague and according to our information Serbia and Montenegro is not fully cooperating with the Hague tribunal, Rehn said.

This means that we have no other option but to suspend negotiations with Serbia, Rehn said adding that the negotiations could be continued immediately after Serbia shows results in cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal.

The next round of negotiations on the country's Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU is scheduled for 11 May. The decision on the continuation of negotiations will be adopted based on facts, Rehn said, adding that no other political activities would be considered, alluding to a referendum in Montenegro and negotiation on the final status of Kosovo.

This country is doing everything backwards. Just yesterday it made into the exclusive list of few countries that are considered as failed countries in Europe. Frankly I do feel some sympathy for Serbs who don't seem to have any hope any longer.

"The only European states in relatively high positions were Russia (43), Belarus (50), Serbia and Montenegro (55) and Moldova (58)"

And you know guys there are decent serbs out there, like that guy Ceda Jovanovic, but it's sad for the progressive part of that country that they are being held hostage by the Kostunica-Radical clan. But i guess still there are more comedians and fools who think that all of this (challenging the EU) is funny and "patriotic"!!!!

)))BRUSSELS (BBC) 3 May 2006 -- An autonomy similar to South Tyrol in the Alto Adige region of Italy may work in Kosovo.

This was a suggestion given at a three-day transatlantic forum in Brussels by US officials participating in the conference.
According to the officials, Kosovo could see an “internal,” conditional independence, under a “soft protectorate” of the EU, without membership in the UN or its own military.

As compared to South Tyrol, Serbs in North Kosovo would receive a form of autonomy similar to the one enjoyed by the German-speaking people living in the Alto Adige region.
All participating officials agreed that the Pristina Government must first implement all international standards without hesitation or exemption; firstly, the ones regarding security, free movement and the protection of Serbs and other non-Albanian minorities, along with the guarantee of returning property to returning refugees. It was agreed upon that decentralisation is the best may to attract investors to Kosovo, something that the future of the region will depend on.

Officials of the US administration stated at the forum that Serbs, even though they represent a minority population in Kosovo, have historical rights in the region, and added that America will not turn its back on the Serbs, regardless of the situation with Hague fugitive Ratko Mladic, even though this problem must be taken care of immediately.

They added that the EU will be pressured to include Serbia into its structure swiftly. Both European and American officials stressed that Serbia cannot stop at saying “no” to independence, and that it must present concrete offers and proposals for the solving of the Kosovo status question. One delegate was rising concern that if Kosovo breaks away totally and Serbia joins EU in 5-8 years, there will be a new Berlin wall against Kosovo since Kosovo will have another 15 to 20 years before joining the EU.(((

Serbia is being completely cooperative-they are looking for Mladic even though there is no proof that he is in Serbia at all. All the proof the Serbian government has points to his being in Bosnia.

"All the proof the Serbian government has points to his being in Bosnia." You mean serbian occupied part of Bosnia!

hmmm now Vice President of the Serbian government has resigned because of the suspension of talks and Mladic.

Shows that at least something is being done I suppose

Labus knows that arrest is doable but is not being done because Kostunica doesn't want it to happen. Labus thinks the same way as Hague.

hahahahahahahahahahah this must HURT

Im not sure its that simple anon.

I think Kostunica does want the Mladic story over with. But he wants Mladic to surrender.

The alternative is that Mladic is killed in the action to arrest him. Kostunica doesnt want that but others in Serbia do want it.

Why? Because they are afraid that Mladic is unstable enough to want to implicate everybody he can including some members of the Serbian government.

There is a third possibility - that Mladic will be arrested and not tried because he's sick.

Now unlike some of them who are faking, Mladic really is sick. How sick he really is I dont know.
Maybe they are waiting for him to get so sick that he cant be tried.

There you have some of the theories going round in so called 'informed' circles.

If Mladic is in Serbia being helped by renegade army people wouldn't it be logical to think that these army people had weapons and would try to attack anybody who tried to get Mladic? Is it possible if Mladic is in Serbia (that hasn't been proven) that they can't arrest him without a mini war breaking out between these renegade army people and the presumably Serbian police that would be sent to capture him?

It is impossible for Kostunica to invite NATO into Serbia to capture Mladic-that would just further help the nationalist in the upcoming elections.

I just think that since the Serbian government seems fairly eager to join the EU and capture Mladic that these talks should just continue.

No there are only a couple of government politicians that could be implicated in some way.

And the implication would be to do with knowledge of where Mladic was hiding. These are not the same men as during Milosevic after all.

Yes maybe its more to do with Bosnia judgement but its hard to say. Mladic could be a loose canon. He is not the dishonest type even if he would rather kill first and ask questions later.

It was always Karadzic that prefered the criminal activity. Mladic was a soldier.

Anon yes it is logical to assume they might fight. But that would effectively be suicide by Mladic because then the government could choose whether they wanted him dead or not.

But there wouldnt really be a mini war. The population of Serbia would mostly breathe a sigh of relief that this stone around the neck would be gone. Me too.

mitrovica Del Ponte says that Bosnian talks with the EU should be suspended till Bosnia hands him over.

Its unfair - surely its upto international forces to arrest Karadzic.

The fact that serbia keeps a headstrong in bringing in Wanted International Terrorists / Mass Killers shows how dedicated serbia is to anything other then its own ego. If serbia keeps this up Kosova, Albania, and Bosnia will join the EU before serbia will. Will the serbs stand for this, will they stand the stamp of EU everytime they cross serbia-Kosova border? Since they would have to travel to Kosova and EU is raising the visa costs it is really going to set serbia a whole lot.

12:29 AM blogger. What you wrote was extremly funny. I showed it to all my friends here in US and they were laughing a lot. I want to say to the Serbs that the world has changed a lot lately and Serbia has all the support from US (except Mladic that you must hand over asap).
No one that supported Kosovo in the past, ie Clinton, Holbrooke etc has any power anymore and the current politicians here are not in favor for independence, you will see later.
